The controversy illustrates a change from an era when professors set the bar and expected the class to meet it, to the current more supportive, student-centered approach.

Nope, nice try but you don't get to own the narrative just because you edit the news, ma'am.  White elites have been lowering standards -- that some students are still able to meet, in pursuit of "diversity".  You can't do that in the sciences, anymore than you can in sports, Ms. Ryan.

If the athlete makes the grade, great.  Ditto our scholars.  Handholding at the lower levels is wonderful.  Especially for the elite's children who need the pampering, and are used to the extra help.  But you need "cuts".  You need to "cut" the ones who can't meet the standards at the top levels -- whether it be Wimbleton or organic chemistry.

You know that if you follow sports.  Diversity is wonderful, something to be pursued, but the best take the field.  Period.  If you don't believe that, you ruin the game.

Science is not a game.  People earn bachelor of science degrees over bachelor of arts degrees for good reason.  Professional standards mean respected professions with professionals who have made the cut, who can make the grade.  This is how we have confidence in our teams and our players.

It's not fair for elite white people, who have had it good themselves and maybe aren't really top notch in their own careers, and likely would have been benched in favor of more competitive players years ago were the game not fixed, to lower the standards to let more people into the game.

It's not fair to the players  -- the ones who make the cut and the ones who do not -- and most of all:  it's not fair to the team.
