Is it me...

or do you smell race-baiting in here too?

We're going to eventually face up to the untenable economic/entitlement game we've got going on, but to stir the pot with accusations that those who don't want to the government to further make promises they can't keep are descendants of Confederates eager to turn back the clock??

Hey -- I'm all for creative writing too, and sure, it's good to have an "enemy" to demonize, especially if it brings you more reader eyeballs in a dwindling market... but let's keep an eye on Krugman and the meme he's addressing here.

A former member of Journolist, that some say is still together online out there pushing favored political and policy positions, I hope the other pundits don't pick up on this "Republicans want Slaveholding" nonsense.

There was a time when Republicans used to refer to themselves, proudly, as “the party of Lincoln.” But you don’t hear that line much these days. Why?

The main answer, presumably, lies in the G.O.P.’s decision, long ago, to seek votes from Southerners angered by the end of legal segregation. With the old Confederacy now the heart of the Republican base, boasting about the party’s Civil War-era legacy is no longer advisable.
...
Wednesday’s hearings aren’t likely to have any immediate effect on monetary policy. But they offer a revealing — and appalling — look at the mind-set of one of our two major political parties. We’ve always known that the modern G.O.P. wants to take America back to the way it was before the New Deal; but now it’s clear that the party wants to build a bridge to the 19th century, and maybe even to the antebellum era. Backward, march!

There's real concerns to be addressed in America now for those looking forward -- keep an eye on the rising food and gas prices that affect everyday working lives -- and trying to pit black against white, North against South, Dem v. Republican ... who does that help? Who is harmed?

Haven't we been down that "blame" road before, and can't we see any shades of grey? United we stand, divided we fall? Remember that one? If we're going to chage mindsets like this, proud almost of getting something for nothing in an underhanded way, we're going to have to learn to work together as Americans.

Those who seek to further split us, to act as though there's an honest threat of secession going on underground, something tells me that's a man frustrated and not operating from Nobel level expertise, but more like a gossip girl eager to spread dirt.

No thanks.
