Backtracking on Zelensky's Bravery? No.
As the Ukranian War rages on and more of Kiev is destroyed by Russian bombs, American media begins to backtrack regarding the famous Zelensky quote offering to airlift him to safety in Poland, leaving his people behind to fight the resistance alone.
CNN — “Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has turned down an offer from the United States of evacuation from the capital city Kyiv, the Ukraine embassy in Britain said Saturday on Twitter.” New York Times: “Mr. Zelensky’s response to a reported American offer to evacuate him — ‘I need ammunition, not a ride’ — will most likely go down in Ukrainian history whether he survives this onslaught or not.”
The Washington Post has a front-page story about American officials making contingency plans to evacuate Zelensky to Poland, where he could lead a Ukranian government in exile.
I don't think that is realistic. Not after the comparisons to the American Alamo, and those feting Zelensky for being the brave leader Ukraine needs now, willing to sacrifice his life for his country.
If Kiev falls and Zelensky flees, the war is over and Ukraine will have been conquered by Russia. Then Americans will stop arming the resistance, because none will remain as credible fighters, and Russia will stop bombing Ukraine.
The war is everything now.
