Confidential to the People who Think Tearing Down Statues and Renaming Places Will Bring Peace... *bump*
A few years back, the Minneapolis City Council made a big deal over removing slaveholder John Calhoun's name from one of the most famous lakes in the city. Racist! they told us.
The Lake was renamed what the natives originally called it, Bde Maka Ska. Here is (humorous) signage of the change. Isn't that funny? They made a big deal over renaming the lake, but Lake Calhoun Parkway remains...
In conclusion, the black community really should be focusing on substantive life-or-death issues, not just falling for symbolic renaming rights... And white people who are so eager to offer concessions should understand, renaming your lakes and parks, parkways and schools, is not going to be enough. If you want peace, work for justice... changes within the justice system, and to the majority-white people currently on the inside populating it and making the policies that are essentially killing off inner-city minorities, from the "essential" workers to those without jobs.
Who is benefitting from the current system today, and taking home money for their work that really is not positively impacting society as a whole? Who is feeding and raising their own families on the current system that perpetuates injustice? Target that...
Why would anyone continue to vote for Democratic candidates in the places that have continually failed them> If you believe there are no other options, perhaps that is why you would settle for just jumping in the lake... Bde Maka Ska. (The native tribes also re-negotiated a lot of old treaties ensuring themselves current-day casino rights too, remember. They did not settle for renaming, and I don't even think they much cared about the white man's symbolism, to be honest...)
