James Bennet at the NYT "Resigns"

The silencing begins with the claiming of the first scalp...
It never ends with one. The thirst for bloody more continues.

Bennet's crime?
He oversaw, without reading, the publishing of an editorial by Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas calling for federal troops to be sent in to put down the civil unrest -- fires, and total destruction of businesses and federal government buildings -- seen earlier in the week in American cities, if local policing forces were unable to handle it.

The kids in journ-o-lism today?  They couldn't handle that opinion.
It put their lives at risk, allegedly, to think of federal troops protecting black people in the neighborhoods being burned and looted, where black people (and white people, and ethnics too) lived and worked.

So Bennet is the first scalp claimed professionally, replaced by Katie Kingsbury overseeing the NYT editorial page through the November elections, the paper announced today.  Interesting that her appointment is timed specifically with the presidential election.
