How can you "support" others if you don't first support yourself and your own?

Is it better to have lesser possessions that are 100% your own, earned and maintained by you, or bigger things that, truth be told, you got gifted and didn't work for 100% on your own?  I say the former. It seems to me you appreciate those things more, and care for them better.

So on the beach you're strollin' real high rollin'
Everything you have is yours and not stolen
A girl runs up with somethin' to prove
So don't just stand there bust a move…
