Wait until She Learns About Eileen Gu.

Ann Althouse said...

"I can see how a context-free reference to "Chinese voters" would be wrong if you meant to refer to American voters who are Chinese."

They're American, not Chinese. They have Chinese ancestry.

Ann Althouse said...

"If anything she is constantly referring to Americans and Chinese, and your President, and I’m constantly reminding her she’s an American too."

If that's what the NYT means to say about the people it's calling "Chinese," then let's get that out in the open. If Chinese-Americans don't think of themselves as American, that's a big issue, and it's part of a ragingly hot issue. Do immigrants assimilate or do they stay within their group, feeling alien and oppositional? Do they love their country, the country they were either born in or embraced in a solemn ceremony, or are they really aligned with a foreign power?

Why these educated people can't get outside their insular bubbles and talk to American ethnics is beyond me.  California isn't that far, you don't even have to fly to get there.  And there's a Chinatown in an American city near you.  Maybe more exposure will lessen her fears?  Many Americans don't identify as "White" (that's just a skin color coming out of winter!  Like tanned, or sunburned!) but if they know their roots, practice their ethnic traditions and religions openly here in America, they are part of a larger cultural tradition that is openly practiced and celebrated in cultural and religious feasts and holidays.

Don't question our patriotism, please, or reluctance to accept your "White American" label.  We're so much richer than that, and we know it too!  Our roots.  I suspect the Americans who are pushing to genericize us all are like once colorful shirts that have tumbled through the bleach water a few too many times...

They're washed out, lack all color, and don't really remember what it was like back when they were bright and fresh.  That's the benefit that immigrants bring us, ethnics all.
