Puerto Rican Independence.

My friend was raised in New York City, but her parents returned to family land in Isabela, PR upon retiring years ago.  You can fly into Aguadilla now, in the northwest, to avoid the drive from San Juan.  People prepare.  Everybody has generators out in the country, and cisterns on the top of the house too for water. (There was a water strike in July years ago, when I was visiting; they survived.)  Remember, it's not like our urban areas, where people rely on the government to provide water and electricity when the hurricanes hit...

This isn't their first rodeo, and it's never as bad as it seems.  Puerto Ricans, with their rich mixed-race history, aren't a people who want your pity.  Taino, Spanish, African... and all the newcomers who came after that, often blended in a mixed race people.

Tough too.  I like the island myself.
