 Now he is running to represent Wisconsin as their senator.

It's just too soon. Nothing to do with race, just he's inexperienced at a time when nobody wants to try out new people in new roles to give them a chance and see how they do.  They're gonna look at what you've done, and double down on assessing your future work output via what you've produced in the past. 

Based on your track record, who was running in your wake. 

No wonder so many fear honest officiating today. They don't like the scorecard. They're kinda still in denial like that.
