Makes More Sense to Me Now.
Never knew this one was about D.I.V.O.R.C.E. *

* That just became legal in Ireland in summer of 1996, approved in a national referendum the year before. (Ireland was a country for years ruled by their Religious. They have a Constitution, unlike Israel, that formalizes Religious Power in the State.)
Of course, just because divorce wasn't legal doesn't mean people didn't separate -- permanently -- and even go on to create other families, unrecognized legally. The Law had to catch up to what was happening in Ireland in people's lives, much like American law had to catch up to gay relationships and families in America in 2015: the U.S. Supreme Court in Obergefell overturned Baker and required all 50 states to issue marraige licenses to same-sex couples applying, and used legal powers to force States to recognize same-sex marriages validly performed in other jurisdictions.
Not sure where O'Connor got any of her divorces -- likely not in Ireland as this song came out before then -- but I think it is interesting how we are shaped on some of these social issues based on our ethnic backgrounds and religions. Our parents and our cultures guide us. Not everything is as disposable everywhere, for good reason.
