"You Can Take the Boy Out of New York, But You Can't Take the New York Out of the Boy."

Nick Kristof is not an Oregonian, for purposes of legal residency requirements allowing him to run as governor, the Oregon Supreme Court ruled. How he identifies, and where he  has owns family land, is not relevant to making him a resident in time to run.  Live there longer, and run again.

The purpose of residency requirements is not just knowledge of a region, but you don't want wealthier populations "carpetbagging" in -- particularly to less wealthy regions -- and buying political power, which happens sometimes with transplants.

No one is saying Mr. Kristof culturally is more a New Yorker than an Oregonian, but legally, the Oregon court is correct.  I think the Sullivan standard needs to be reworked in a changing "media" landscape too.

Some good will come of this current Court.  Stagnation is not good for the country. Times will change.
