Why is it...

that the workers who really could use the benefit of a vacation (think ... soldiers) can't seem to afford one these days, and yet the people who have the lightest-lifting jobs feel the need to take off and put their two feet up when the work they're supposed to be managing goes south, and we're told ... they so need the rest?

Um, from what?

Hard-hitting press conferences with softball questions?
Tired eyeballs from reading dispassionately off the teleprompters?
Phone-ear from consulting with Hil and the gals over the new Libya fight?
Michelle and the girls always hounding, hounding him for the latest toys to buy at market?

or maybe, coming down off the adrenaline high when he had to go out and get bin Laden? Yeah man, that takes a lot out of ya...

It's the perception, stupid. That you want all of us in the game, pulling in the same direction, putting up with the temporary austerity because it takes all of us to win these wars ... and then you head off toward the Cape.

Some say people will forget.

More likely, some people* will forget. Others just have reinforced that this is a weak presidency: that we (some of us) voted a man into the presidency, the highest office in the land, during a fiscal crisis, waaay before he was ready, careerwise, to play in those leagues, and now the tuckered-out man-child needs to be coddled with extra r + r -- a lil break with the women and children before the challenging school year starts -- until he gets back on track on his own job responsibilities and shows us what he really can do... if only these durned Republicans would ever give him the chance, that is!

Could he do something right now, in August 2011, that will make the economy better at that future point, something that will be more effective than biking and golfing on Martha's Vinyard? (sic) I don't think he can, and if he doesn't think he can, in my book, that's a point in his favor. Spare me your programs and clever ideas. I like getting some evidence that he knows the limits of government.

Obama's presidency is about getting reelected, and doing nothing right now fits that agenda just fine. I don't know how tired he is, but it doesn't matter. He should rest. Lie low. Do some fundraising... even though he already has a billion dollars. Don't waste your energy in futile gestures at doing something about the economy you don't know how to fix. Be cool. The cool Obama was good enough in '08.... Enjoy the summer, Mr. President!

Awww... a little "public servant" love in the comments, from Madison, to master with love:

I hope he spends some quality time with his daughters and wife. Vacations are the things you look back on with fondness when you're middle-aged.

I loved our trips to the ocean (NC & NJ) when I was growing up.

Yep, not like these are extra-ordinary times for the kids coming up today, counting on the grownups to actualy, you know, do the public-servant jobs they're collecting the well-rewarded salaries for... It's disagreeable to offer a fair performance evaluation on this class, Mrs. Estrich tells us. Points just for trying.

These are the days, my friends
We thought they'd never end...

Let the choir sing!
