and would have, had the US not gotten involved in gun running them Hope, with the goal of using Ukrainians to bleed out the Russian Army at such a cost to the remainder of their country.*
In the end, I suspect the "settlement" after all these years of death and destruction will be much the same if the Ukrainians had not "fought back" and had their little moment of glory in being able to attack Russia proper with US -taxpayer-supplied weapons, even though they were only to be used to defend their borders...
Americans don't much care whether a Russian-speaking region of Ukraine is recaptured by Russia or not. The US is not threatened. Let NATO take up their membership rolls without US intervention.
Everything we touch escalates death and destruction of late... the American 21st century, the boomers' legacy, what happened to the world under their watch..
I think the WWI soldiers would be saddened that we didn't learn anything from them: Ukraine has sacrificed so much life for so little in land... what a worthless little war that could have been avoided if the US had not stepped up to put our thumb on the scale... with intention of a proxy war where Ukrainians, civilians even, could pay in their lives for taking out as many Russians as possible before the "optimists" are forced to reckon with reality...
There is safety in simply trusting that the worst will happen. To dare to hope has always been the risk.
RMc said... It reminds me of when the Quebec Nordiques moved to Denver in the 90s, and it was leaked that the team would be called "Rocky Mountain Xtreme". People were horrified, natch, so they went with their supposed second choice, "Colorado Avalanche".
Still think it's a dumb name, tho not as bad as Seattle Kraken.
Vivek Ramaswamy would be qualifed and an excellent Attorney General. He will look even more impressive next to a badboy like Gaetz....
If it's IDF soldiers vs. Children, I'm rooting for the kids!
The more military men Israel loses in this fight, the better. If they want to kill to expand their land holdings, better their soldiers die than their Jewish children, afterall.
Pray that wiser minds prevail, and the Israelis dispose of Netanyahu soon, before another nation has to step in and take him out... Game on! "Two... four... we want more!"
The deaths on Wednesday made it one of the most lethal days for the Israeli military since it invaded Lebanon last month to battle Hezbollah fighters.
Military man turned journalist and law professor David French is NOT surprised by Matt Gaetz' nomination and even has him confirmed already. Not so fast, David, not so fast. Hold up on your "I told ya so!" and fear mongering.
Gaetz’s nomination is particularly dreadful. He isn’t just the least-qualified attorney general in American history (he barely practiced law before running for elected office and has served mainly as a MAGA gadfly in Congress), he’s also remarkably dishonest and depraved.
Who said the old dogs can't work harder and put out more copy? ;-)
Look, Trump's inspiring everyone to work harder and not take anything for granted, it seems. We're all in this together, and if you're going to collect top dollar, you really should be producing more...
Let's go read her? ADDED: 'ope, not a column, just a bit in their Opinions blog.
Damn, she really hasn't picked up on the national mood at all, what a condescending piece*. = The Dems are the riders on the White Horse
(Gaza, Gaza, Gaza, Maureen. It's not anti-semitic to mourn the unneccesary deaths of children sleeping and playing in their homes, schools, hospitals or evacuation shelter, Maureen. Or shot in the back of the head in the streets... don't you trust the doctors trying to save lives over there, or has all of DC sucked down Bibi's kool-aid poison?)
and Trump's call for #Change doesn't raise to the levels of the once great Obama's hope and dreams, and false promises that mostly enriched himself at the expense of the communities he allegedly served... Wait and see which one actually delivers more on behalf of the nation in the end. Job one? Negotiating an end to our sending billions to Netanyahu and Zelensky to destroy, while we need those own billions invested here in our own communities rebuilding and saving AMERICAN lives...
Defend the border. End the economic inequality (you and your pal Nancy just took too much, Maureen... your work isn't really worth all that...) Stop funding other people's wars... That's not a woke message he won on. It's the national priorities now of the American people. Face reality there in DC?

Perhaps the most telling signal was sent by Melania Trump, who didn’t bother to show up at all. Underscoring that lapse in politesse, Jill Biden delivered a handwritten note to the president-elect to give to his wife.
Melania’s no-show was a way of saying: The Trumps tried, in their way, to do things the official way last time. But this time, they’re going to do any damn thing they want. They’re going to run the country like one of Trump’s companies. Tradition will be subsumed by Trumpism. And that’s a very unsettling thought.
That's her kicker, punching down at... Melania, who has tried her best to stay out of all this, but likely refused to show because the Biden administration raided her underwear drawer. I would think a lady like Maureen might show more sympathy to her "keep me out of this; I'm just the wife!" sister...
So much for goodwill and trying to work with "the other side". Divided we fall, you know. If the country goes down, it really won't matter much how good the Elites are living in DC and NYC either. Think on those things?
And leave the wives alone already. (Chivalary is back in, dontchaknow?) Speak out for the women and children of Palestine, and use your power -- and looongstanding position as the Catholic woman columnist (along with Bret Stephens' sparring partner -- though she mostly loses, surrenders even -- Gail Collins) -- to perhaps punch UP, at the people actively killing them today? Make your mother proud of your work again?
Eric Hovde, who lost his Senate campaign, is the first prominent candidate to suggest his race was rigged. Election Officials Say Wisconsin Republican’s Claims ‘Lack Any Merit’
I wouldn't doubt if the recent election that allegedly saw Wisconsin again choose Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-Madison) over Erik Hovde indeed was decided, after hours, by Milwaukee voting shenanigans... I do predict it will be the last Senate race she wins, just like Biden got beat by Trump this go around. You can't always prove it, but looking ahead, I think it's clear the incumbent will not win in Wisconsin again.
Call it a strong hunch... She just doesn't deliver on the promises and has been in there a loooong time while things soured throughout the state, outside of Madison (government funded) and Milwaukee (larger urban metro).
Your new proposed Attorney General, America:
After graduating from William & Mary Law School,[16] Gaetz worked at the law firm Keefe, Anchors & Gordon (now AnchorsGordon)[17] in Fort Walton Beach.[18] In October 2021, the Florida bar suspended Gaetz from practicing law due to unpaid fees.[19] He was reinstated after the $265 fee was paid.[20]
Lol... how hard is it to be disciplined enough to cut your membership dues check on time? And they don't suspend you the day after you miss a payment; I'm sure they sent plenty of "OVERDUE" notices... he must have really dropped the ball to temporarily lose his license...
Doesn't sound very disciplined to me. Not too late to put Vivek up for that important role, President Trump, really. Elon can handle the "government czar in charge of cost cutting" by himself, really. I suspect Musk's antics would get on Vivek's nerves too if the men have to work closely together or spend time in one place... Call it a hunch. The immigrant's son isn't in the same class as a Gaetz, a Musk or a Hegeseth even...
Vivek WORKED his way up. Has some REAL accomplishments under his belt... Nuff said.
No way will Matt "I like em real young!" Gaetz be confirmed Attorney General of the US. Just look at that mug... and it's not like he has ANY accomplishments to offset who he is.
I don't think Hegeseth, the Minnesota guy who went to Princeton as a basketball admit, went adventuring like so many similar men to Iraq as a National Guard soldier in that losing war, went to Hahvard Kennedy School of government as an affirmative action "vet" admit, and then parlayed his education and National Guard experience into setting up a MN non-profit (they're rife up here) where he hired his biological brother at an inflated salary and spent 1/3 of the money collected on Christmas parties for vets... is such a great pick either.
He's just a PR/fundraiser guy really.
The man has been married three times, and had a child out of wedlock while cheating on his wife with a woman at Fox. (I get it -- Donald Trump has a similar backstory, but... this is offset by Trump's work and his aging.) The military values discipline, loyalty and hard work: I just don't see any of that in Hegeseth's rather soft background myself.
Without recess appointments, these two loyal soldiers of Trump likely will not be confirmed. There's just no "there" there to justify these men in those positions. Best have backup picks lined up, I think...
I know Gaetz won't be confirmed; he's just plain unlikeable. And my fear is if Hegeseth gets in, the country will still be on autopilot like under Joe Biden, taking military orders from Bibi and AIPAC.
Let's see if Donald Trump can do what he said and deliver a negotiated peace to both Ukraine/Russia and Israel/Palestine. We've got to get their war spending off our payments ledger, and put the billions we're shipping to Netanyahu and Zelensky to use in our own backyards so Joe Six-Pack isn't paying for their fight.
-----------
* He should have gone with Vivek in this role. Even RFK Jr. would be a better choice, if we're trying to turn back the clock and don't care about their sex lives...
I also don't think the Catholics who turned out for Trump will be much impressed with these two men as his picks... Personal discipline and getting the job done -- winning! -- matters. Where is that in the background of these two? Where are their accomplishments? Hm.
Today is the Biden-imposed deadline for Israel, who have not increased humanitarian aid into Gaza, to face a permanent cut off of military aid to our no-longer ally. Bibi Netanyahu's Israel has blown it. His media enablers are doing him as much help as they did the Dems here, pre-election...
Joe Biden has nothing to lose now -- he's lost his party and his country. He should take the final step before he is fully disgraced, and do the right thing before he leaves office...
------------------
(Remember former Illinois Governor George Ryan, the Republican who was caught and convicted of federal racketeering, bribery, extortion, money laundering and tax fraud stemming from his time in office? He's 90 now, and quietly living out his life in Iowa, wiki tells me...
His greatest political contribution in office? What he did for the State of Illinois that is his lasting legacy, his #Change for the masses for the better?
As governor, he declared a moratorium on his state's death penalty on January 31, 2000.[25][26]
That's right, just before leaving office in disgrace facing the political scandal that would imprison him for five years, he knew he had nothing to lose and overturned a deadly and knowingly unjust system of capital punishment in the state. The following governor was able to help abolish that sentence forever, saving innocent lives in a land where police corruption put many wrongly convicted men to death...
Why doesn't Joe Biden -- the good people around him who also have nothing left to lose now -- make a symbolic stand at least, one that President Trump's Congress would surely overturn -- and publicly confront Bibi Netanyahu and explain that we American taxpayers are done supplying him the weapons for his war crimes?
Let the arms manufacturers built plants outside Tel Aviv, let the IDF soldiers do their own factory worker in arm up their own. The diaspora that supports killing children as a military strategy can fund their religious state, or have an internal dialogue about the nation state's survival without US support and priorities.
You see, in overreaching, the State of Israel can never return now to the myths they have been telling themselves. Those with open eyes and honest hearts have no respect for this way of life, and we do not want our loved ones, today or tomorrow, inheriting the messes Bibi Netanyahu is leaving behind in destroying so many hopes for a better life, as well as so much life on our shared planet.)
Americans are blessed. We don't have to kill thousands and thousands of children today to protect our own people. We should put as much daylight as possible between ourselves and those countries continually on the attack, assassinating people in sovereign nations and killing children sleeping in their own beds...
"Do Unto Others As You'd Have Done To You".
"Thou Shalt Not Murder" Keep His word, or pay the price. Wise men still fear Him, not Bibi Netanyahu.
Cmon now, buck up. The comfortable class, where most media denizens reside today, has to take their lumps too. They... underperformed. From the gambling men working the polls, to the Israeli-Americans advocating for their religious homeland, from those on the Trump beat withholding material for their soon-to-be-published books to those who "drop in" and report on the nation every four years... you blew it.
You're so out touch with the American people you STILL think the election results are because we're ... angry, hateful, undereducated, racist, misogynist, etc etc etc. But... we are the country. WE run the country. WE feed you, we clean up after you, we keep the wheels turning daily...
Our alleged betters honestly believe they have won a meritorious game. WHy? Because look at all the prizes they've collected -- the homes, the cars, the boats, the travel, the purebred pets, the grandchildren, the medals pinned to their chests: they're winning!, they've convinced themselves. Some are so rich, they are even picking from the "losers" which Blacks, or gays, or ... Dreamers they want to lift above the field of competition and artificially be named as winners too! Geniuses even... look at those bank accounts and stock portfolios: how can you say they haven't won, and won big at that?
American Meritocracy today!
The answer is: look at how the team is faring. Look at the world we're financing... our own children take up guns, right before Christmas, and shoot up classrooms of first graders... in return, we take tax money from the American workers so our ally can indiscriminately slaughter classrooms of children weekly. Why? To avoid the children becoming indoctrinated as terrorists; to punish their parents and grandparents for the crimes they have allegedly committed; to gain more land and property for the victors...
Everybody being honest knows we are headed into Dark Ages, destroying the world's civilization with our American technology daily. Our young people, those not shooting up schoolrooms, have decided not to procreate and try to raise children in this madness. That's a sane response to a world that no longer values human lives or humanity.
You hope the good people of this country who voted for #Change -- back in 2008 as well as 2016, 2020 and 2024 -- have put up the numbers now in this election "game" so that those watching cannot deny what it is we want.... This status quo must end. The economic inequality sure will. I for one hope to live to tell... (1968 and counting: I've seen a lot, and I'm not one to close my eyes to what I see or to go along to get along, calculating that which would serve me best at the cost of my team.)
Are the Midwest manufacturers panicking about the cost of supplies going up under Trump's proposed tariff plan afraid of going out of business for that reason or ... because many of their high-knowledge employees are undocumented immigrants who have been skirting immigration laws to work cheaply for an American employer who can figure out a way to bring them in to work...
I ask, because I know of a Polish employee of a small Midwest manufacturer whose pregnant wife delivered an American citizen in our country this Spring: the company owner's girlfriend is Polish-American(?) and worked to put them up in a newly built but unfinished house (they brought their child home to an unheated place, but... American citizenship!) in Middleton, Wisconsin.
They are really having a hard time with the changes Donald Trump promises. Recrafting their tax plans, etc. (The woman is a prolific poster of personal information on social media and publicly shares her W's, so to speak...)
I wondered at the time: is that legal? Can an employer as a perk offer to bring in a foreign bride of an employee for a short period of time so she can deliver her baby here before returning home? If so, I hope Trump cracks down on that. Like Wal Mart exploiting workers and crafting their part-time hours so they do not qualify for health insurance but do food stamps, we need more employers to stop up and stop transferring their share of the wealth to the government. Sure you'll make less profits, but if you take care of your American workers, we won't need see the growing economic inequality between the workers, the true talent and the rentier-inheritance-government class.
Level the playing field. We want to play in a fair competitive game, the American people said in this last election. We're on to you... (and we're done paying to kill children with our tax dollars too.)
-------------------
MEANWHILE: The House too has fallen. The red tide has swept all three branches of federal government, and more importantly perhaps: the state legislatures of the majority of our country except a few true-blue states, like Illinois and Minnesota in the Midwest. Years of artificial accomplishment for the allegedly meritorious has caught up: there is no denying the results of that clean sweep now...
The problem is not with the majority of the American people. The problem is with the minority that has enriched itself by playing race against race, gender against gender, in their pursuit of identity politics. Those who would transfer their personal familial costs onto the government, even as they hold back -- "shelter" their own assets -- to benefit their often under-qualified, under-performing, allegedly over-worked heirs. No more. Nada mas.
A fair playing field: can you do the work well, put in the hours required -- in the office even -- and deliver results? Or are you there to game the system and help the connected? "We Don't Want Nobody Nobody Sent" was the Dem Machine political way for a long time. Those times are gone now. Best learn to be competitive or stop taking so much...
Think of Trump as the Enforcer, and he's not playing your games anymore. Stop cheating us.
And just like that, the Legacy Media* begins to leave the building...
Former Fox News Host Chris Wallace to Quit CNN After 3 Years
The 77-year-old veteran anchor told The Daily Beast that he planned to venture into streaming or podcasting.
Chris Wallace can! Good for him.
Noted: Nobody in the legacy media "retires" anymore when they leave employment, they just transition into vanity projects like substack newsletters and podcasts for private subscribers, speaking gigs or book contracts.
Busy work, but retired from outside employment, nonetheless. Nttawwt. The competitive workplace is a grind today and nobody wants to be treated like a worker when there's more easy money for softer real-world skills treading more comfortable paths in safer spaces...
--------
* Who is more legacy media in America today than Chris Wallace, (son of the more hard-boiled Mike who paved his boy's career path; nttawwt), who made his name in broadcast news as it transitioned to the news-entertainment era when cable came in and Wheel of Fortune started biting into the evening news numbers...
Whoa, I almost wrote RIP Chris, but it's only his professional career ending, not his #Life. (There's a difference, you know...)
The Road Not Taken
